What is Col. Joe's Redneck Squadron?
In the summer of 1997, I received one of the greatest honors of my life when I was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. I invited all my family and a bunch of friends to Dayton for the occasion. It was a very big deal to me, so I wanted to gather everybody I cared about and turn it into a celebration. Sherry came up with the idea of having all of us wear a red bandana in the pockets of our tuxedos or tucked into the collars of the women's gowns. She handed the bandanas out to Team Kittinger, and as we were all walking down the steps, Bob Snow looked up and observed, "Here comes the Redneck Squadron!"
The name stuck. From then on, we were the Redneck Squadron. We've inducted new members each year since- we have more than a hundred by now- and whenever we gather, we make sure to wear our red bandanas.
